We Are Generation Equality: India Chapter

It’s 2020 and yet

No country has achieved gender equality

Over 2.8 billion women and girls still live in countries that

are not doing enough to improve women’s lives

The world is struggling to tackle issues regarding women’s underrepresentation in parliament, the gender pay gap and gender-based violence.

Legal restrictions has kept 2.7 billion women from accessing the same choice of jobs as men. Less than 25 per cent of parliamentarians were women as of 2019. One in three women experience gender-based violence, still.

At the current rate, it will take us 99.5 years to achieve gender equality.

But we can change that.

Imagine a world where all people have equal rights and opportunities – a world where gender equality is the norm.

Women and girls are not afraid of walking home late at night, and men and boys are not trapped in oppressive masculinities. Men and women get paid equally for work of equal value and share the care work at home.

Imagine equality in political leadership and corporate boardrooms and factory floors. Women have equal say in decisions that affect their lives, their bodies, their policies, and their environment, from villages to cities.

The year 2020 provides us all with a generational opportunity to put women’s rights centre stage.

Billions of people across the world stand on the right side of history every day. They speak up, take a stand, mobilize, and take big and small actions to advance the rights of women and minority genders.

This is Generation Equality.

And India is no different.

Starting today till 31 March 2020, we will bring you closer to the voices of Generation Equality from across the country – voices that demand accelerated progress, visible action and transformative change.
