July 24, 2017
What? Indian government and the ILO jointly-launch ‘Aarambh’ – a unique app to maintain rural roads. As illustrated in the Brochure titled “Mobile Phone based App for Performance Based Maintenance Contracting and Community Contracting for maintenance of rural roads”, the new Mobile Phone App aims at use of GIS-based mapping for making road inventories, condition surveys, and producing cost estimates and other relevant data for preparation and monitoring of annual road maintenance plans. Its usage would greatly enhance the service delivery of the state level institutions in planning and implementing performance based rural roads maintenance contracts.
The Hon’ble Union Minister Mr Tomar and Ms Greenfield also launched a concept note and a guidance note titled “Mobilizing Funds for Maintenance of Rural Road”. The notes outline innovative ways by which state governments can mobilize additional funds for road maintenance, and also showcase international best practices worldwide.
Who? The app was launched by Hon’ble Narendra Singh Tomar, Union Minister for Panchayati Raj, Rural Development, Drinking Water and Sanitation, and by Deborah Greenfield, ILO Deputy Director General (Policy). Ms Greenfield was on an official visit to India.
